Over the course of a 10-day nationwide crackdown on illegal street racing, Thai police arrested nearly 1,000 people and seized around 20,000 motorcycles and cars. According to the National News Bureau of Thailand, the Thai government has been lobbying to add an “attempted racing” offence to the Land Traffic Act, which would make it illegal for people to congregate near public roads with the intent of engaging in illegal racing.
Damrongsak Kittipraphat, deputy commissioner of the Royal Thai Police, says Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has ordered a crackdown on street racers. Totaling 922 people, the operation lasted for 10 days. More than 2,575 parents had their children placed on probation because they allowed their minor children to take part in illegal racing. Those responsible for operating 182 stores selling parts and accessories for automobiles are also being investigated.

The deputy police commissioner has stated that after the crackdown, officers will work with social media influencers and YouTube vloggers to spread the word about the consequences of street racing. Because of the high number of juvenile offenders involved in illegal racing, the police intend to collaborate with the Department of Land Transport to establish a restorative justice programme for juvenile offenders.
